INGSA was well represented at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe’s largest interdisciplinary science conference, which took place from 23-27 July in Manchester, UK. We ran a well-attended session on Cool heads in crises: sound scientific advice in emergencies, with speakers from the Joint Research Centre, UNISDR, EASAC and the Japan Science and Technology Agency.  The panel discussed emerging best practices in scientific advice during emergencies, and ways to strengthen international networks in this area. Sir Peter Gluckman also contributed to sessions on science for sustainable development and toxicants. And James Wilsdon, INGSA vice-chair, wrote an editorial in Science, to coincide with the ESOF meeting, about the prospects for scientific advice in Europe.
